OUR Services

Building Services Engineering

EDP Environmental’s core business is Building Services Engineering – the design of the plumbing, heating, ventilation, security and electrical services which keeps a building running and makes it comfortable for the end user. Although building services are out of sight they are certainly not out of mind. They are critical to the effective future operation of the building and represent a sizeable proportion of construction costs.

EDP Environmental forms an integral part of the Design Team with the Architect and Client. EDP's early involvement with the project team ensures cost and time benefits during the detailed design process and the subsequent building work. Ultimately, the end result is a cost effective, functional, efficient and comfortable building for the occupants.

Mechanical Building Services

Within the design of any building, whether it is commercial or domestic, EDP Environmental will design the Mechanical Building Services. This includes heating systems, gas oil or biomass boilers, natural and mixed mode ventilation, hot and cold water, gas and oil pipework and control systems.

Our involvement ranges from initial project feasibilities, through all of the RIBA Stages (0-7).

Our team are well versed in delivering projects that have to be designed following the BREEAM principles.

  • Ventilation
  • Heating
  • Cooling
  • Medical Gases
  • Control Systems

Electrical Building Services

Within the design of any building, whether it is commercial or domestic, EDP Environmental will design the Electrical Building Services. This includes small power, fire alarms, security systems, telephone communications, lighting and access control.

Our involvement ranges from initial project feasibilities, through all of the RIBA Stages (0-7).

Our team are well versed in delivering projects that have to be designed following the BREEAM principles.

  • Power Distribution
  • Lighting
  • Fire Systems
  • Security Systems
  • IT Infrastructure

Public Health

EPD Environmental are experienced with the design of public health (drainage) services including above ground (foul) drainage systems, and domestic hot and cold water systems within buildings, across a wide range of sectors and building types.

Our experience includes the design of systems, inspections and recommendations for alterations to maintain compliance with the Approved Code of Practice L8 and associated requirements for the prevention of Legionella pneumophila.

Modelling

It is very important to be able to predict the thermal response of a building. Large buildings and buildings with a lot of glazing are particularly difficult to predict without the aid of a Thermal Model. The heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) system of a building, controls the internal temperature and air quality inside the building. The HVAC system needs to deal effectively with changes in outside temperature and be able to control the actual internal temperature in all parts of the building within the design specifications. A Thermal Model has the capability to predict internal temperatures in all parts of the building hour by hour throughout the year. It is able to assess if the design of the building including the glazing and shading and the HVAC system are compatible with maintaining comfortable internal temperatures in all areas at all times. The Thermal Model is a bespoke model for a particular building with a specific location and orientation. Once the Thermal Model has been constructed it can be used to iterate variations on the building’s design specifications. Changes can be made to U-Values and to Building Services specifications to assess the effect those changes may have on controlling internal temperatures.

Sustainability

EDP Environmental is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) to provide a range of Energy Management Services. The Energy Department at EDP Environmental carries-out a wide range of activities in relation to energy consumption and energy efficiency. Energy is a significant cost to all businesses. We help organisations to gain control of their energy usage to:
  • Reduce Energy Consumption
  • Reduce Expenditure on Energy
  • Reduce Carbon Emissions
We carry-out Energy “health-checks” and Energy Audits. Building Projects often require various reports for Planning and BREEAM Assessments. We are able to offer the following reports:
  • Energy Plan or Strategy
  • Carbon Offset Strategy
  • BREEAM ENE Compliance
  • Low and Zero Carbon Feasibility Study
  • Energy Management
  • Part L & EPCs
  • SAP & SBEM
  • DECs
  • ESOS

BIM

EDP Environmental are experienced users of the application of BS 1192, for the application of BIM during the design period.

We utilise REVIT extensively to prepare initial strategy drawings through to fully coordinated services layouts, within a 3D environment, enabling the preparation of detailed sections, builders works layouts, and clash detection. Coordination with the other team members is crucial when preparing these models, to ensure a fully coordinated solution. This can provide significant savings, both programme and cost, when the project is delivered on site.
